We’ve already moved all of Athena’s services off to different ISPs/servers/where ever… and tomorrow we’ll be heading into downtown LA to the NOC it’s been at for the last 5 years.
Athena is outdated and getting pretty old… and I’m pretty sure this server is on its last legs… even though the people over at LAColo (a.k.a. PI Host) treated this server well (never any downtime), it’s time we pull it. I think it’s been well over a year since Athena had any serious services running. All of Twinwork’s related services (notes, j2, etc) have been moved over to Dreamhost. Dreamhost isn’t nearly as fast as Athena (shared hosting for the lose), but we really don’t need so much dedicated CPU time for the leftover Twinwork related sites. (You’ll notice if you try to load j2, it takes forever due to the shared hosting of PHP and MySQL. Soon I’ll be redoing the code for j2 so that it’ll be more efficient… I’ve been meaning to work on the site for awhile now…)
Twinwork Notes will still be running. It’s a bit outdated considering FreeBSD 7.0 was just released. I’ll need to update that site to be a bit more relevant according to Twinwork’s current services. We haven’t been hosting Twinwork’s email on Athena for over a year. Instead, we’ve had Google host our mail. The new Twinwork Notes will probably remove qmail and Pure-FTPd. I’ll keep those pages around in the archives in case people still need them for reference.
Thanks for everyone who did make use of Athena when their services were up… those who played Return to Castle Wolfenstein, Enemy Territory, and F.E.A.R. This also means the Teamspeak server will be going down permanently.
If you don’t recall, Athena went up early February 2003. It’s only fitting it goes down in late February 2008. The old Twinwork page is still available to read… and badly outdated.
One day I’ll throw another server back into the NOC (it’s already been dubbed Minerva). It’ll be a awhile before we do so. But it’s something we want to keep doing.
FYI, for those are curious about Athena’s aging specs…
- 4U chassis
- Intel Pentium 3 1.12GHz x2
- 512MB PC-133
- 40GB x4 in RAID-5
I also need to get rid of it somehow. It’ll be sitting around in my garage waiting for it to get to recycled or taken away. If you’re interested in this server and in the SoCal area, please leave a comment.
