About

Twinwork

Twinwork was born in January 2000 out of a small home office in the San Fernando Valley. It consisted of only two computers and a switch. It was my workstation and a Windows 2000 server. It was running MS SQL and that’s where Single Thread was first hosted on. It was developed using ASP.

Soon I gave up on the Wink2k server and started to look into an alternative OS. I believe I was looking at some version of (at the time) Red Hat Linux. However, a friend of mine on IRC guided me through using FreeBSD. I believe it was FreeBSD 4.0. I had to figure out how to setup qmail, Apache, and MySQL… as well as PHP. That Win2k server was called Job.

Single Thread grew out of Job along with the Flyhunter Art Tribe.  The Flyhunter site no longer exists.  Single Thread only exists in its j2 form.  Single Thread was originally created to mirror the idea of keal’s site: Starship Boy (also no longer in existence).  However, in contrast to Starship Boy, Single Thread was themed after the American culture instead of Starship Boy’s Asian culture.

Job heavily served Single Thread and Flyhunter for three years.  It wasn’t until February of 2003 that Athena was created to replace Job’s services.  We threw Athena into a data center in LA.  It was hosting a number of web services as well as game servers (RTCW, ET, & F.E.A.R.).  We retired Athena at the end of February of 2008.

Twinwork still exists today, but no longer at a dedicated server.  It’s back at a shared hosting provider.  Performance isn’t nearly as  high as it used to be, but it’ll do for now.  One day we’ll bring Twinwork back to a dedicated server… it’s just going to take awhile.
